How to Make Tall Centerpiece Vases

Written 7 May , 2010

Centerpieces featuring tall glass vases projects refinement as well as good taste, and allows unobstructed communication across tables. Here are some tips:

  • Arrange vases by height, from a very tall vase to a number of shorter vases as it offers the best balance and visual effect.
  • Limiting flower and color combinations down to 2 or 3 choices means continuity. For more creativity, throw in some hurricane lanterns and tapered candles to the design. You are only limited by your imagination.
  • Choose the tall centerpiece vases according to the proportion of the room and table. You may use a 32” cylinder vase, 2 20” Eiffel tower vases and also 2 10 X 4 cylinder vases. As an alternative, you can also use a 24” cylinder vase, 2 12” pilsner vases, and 2 4” square vases. Try it out until you’re happy with the result.
  • Purchase flowers as well as floral fillers and some greenery to enhance your design. Don’t throw everything in. Limit the flowers to just 3 varieties. Pick the right floral filler and greenery that will complement the blooms.
  • Slip the foam floral holder into the tallest vase. Foam flower holders are made for Eiffel tower vases with a diameter of 6.5” to 7.5”. This will later be the focus of attention of the centerpiece. Slip the foam floral holder into the 2 medium-sized tower or pilsner vases.
  • Remove the foam out of the vases after making sure that they fit right.
  • Trim your flowers, foam filler and greenery to get rid of spoiled and excess foliage. After giving them a fresh cut with a knife, submerge the stems in water. Segregate and assign the flowers, fillers and greenery to their specific containers. Soak the foam holder in water.
  • Set up the floral holder. As you do this, trim the flower stems to their proper length. Before the piece is nearly complete, place it into the tower vase. It will be a good idea to add a couple or more inches of imitation gems or colored marbles at the bottom of the vase to ensure stability. You have a choice of dendrobium, sweet peas or ivy to trail from the floral holder base on to the next vase level.
  • Create two identical arrangements for the two medium sized vases by using your floral holders. Mirror one or a couple of flowers from the tallest vase. For a tighter fit on the vase, wrap the floral holder’s handle with a length of florist tape. Wait until everything’s almost done before positioning them into the tall centerpiece vases.
